“Shark Week, man. How do you not watch that? A whole week of sharks.” -Dean, Supernatural
A few weeks ago, my boyfriend bought me a shark cookie cutter while we were down the beach. So naturally, I needed an occasion to bake some shark sugar cookies. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better time to make these cookies than during a week-long Discovery channel show dedicated to sharks.
While the official Shark Week doesn’t air until tomorrow, there are certaininly more than a few sci-fi movies floating around to keep you occupied until then (e.g – sharknado or sharktopus).
As much as I love watching a movie about a half-shark, half-octopus animal that was created by the military, I prefer watching the real thing. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment I developed an interest in sharks but I can tell you it definitely increased when I was able to snorkel in a tank with them!
However, for those of you not feeling quite ready to jump into a shark tank anytime soon, you can bake these cookies and happily chomp on them while watching shark week.
To bake these cookies I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe, and decorated with royal icing. I used a basic technique of outlining the cookie first (in both white and gray). Next I used water to thin the icing out and “flooded” the cookie for a polished look. After the icing was set, I piped a few other details including the gills and teeth. For the mouth I used some red piping gel I had laying around. Happy Shark Week!
